Faulkton is located in north central South Dakota in Faulk County and is situated between the James and Missouri Rivers. The county was named for Territorial Governor Andrew J. Faulk in the late 1800’s. There are four major highways that intersect the county, with US Highway 212 being a major east/west connecting artery.
Faulkton, near the geographical center with a population of 826 (2020 census), is surrounded by the ten small communities of Chelsea, Cresbard, Miranda, Onaka, Orient, Rockham, Seneca, Wecota and Zell, which are the lifeblood of the area. Even within this small county area (1008 square miles), there is a diversity of ideas, dreams and hopes that, which joined together are revitalizing the area. Combining the experience of an older generation and the energy and enthusiasm of a younger generation can only ensure future growth and sustainability and make the entire area of Faulk County a true community.
Volunteerism has always been alive and well in Faulkton. People have always had a “can do” attitude and therefore the motto, “We Believe In Possible,” is a guidepost for this small community. The people of Faulkton are also realistic to the fact that it takes several resources to accomplish things and see progress in a community. Through the efforts of many people, these resources have been utilized over the years and have given extra leverage in tackling the many issues that are involved in sustaining and growing a small town in rural South Dakota. Being proactive rather than reactive sustains and keeps a community strong. There is also the acknowledgement that a diversity of ideas, dreams and hopes that are joined together provide relevance and energy to the area.
